For the Record: Photography & The Art of the Album Cover
The Photographers Gallery is currently home of For The Record, a celebration of the unique art of album covers and the intertwined history of music and photography. Displaying over 200 album covers, from Robert Mappelthorpe's for Patti Smith and Annie Leibovitz' for Cyndi Lauper to Jean-Paul Goude's for Grace Jones, the exhibition underlines the creative relationships of visual and recording artists.
Works featured include artists like Andy Warhol, Cindy Sherman, David Bailey, David LaChapelle, Ed Ruscha, Elliott Erwitt, Guy Bourdin, Helen Levitt, Irving Penn, Jeff Wall, Joseph Beuys, Juergen Teller, Lee Friedlander, Nan Goldin, Richard Avedon and William Eggleston, who's careers have started out creating covers. Photography plays an intergral part in an artists or bands journey as well, with many of the covers on show being instantly recognisable. The often overlooked importance of photographers, graphic designers and creatives to the identity of the musicians and labels is highlighted, with a mixture of iconic artists and lesser-know visionary collaborations.
For the Record: Photography & The Art of The Album Cover is curated and presented in collaboration with collector and originator of the exhibition, Antoine de Beaupré, whose collection consists of over 15.000 albums, which makes up the foundation of the show.
The exhibition is on view until June 12th at the Photographers Gallery, London.
