BEYOND THE STREETS LONDON
Taking over three floors, London's Saatchi Gallery is the host of one of the most comprehensive grafitti and street art exhibitions in the UK. Curated by grafitti historian Roger Gastman, BEYOND THE STREETS LONDON examines the human need for public self-expression. Each of the exhibition's chapters explores the most important moments in history of the artistic movement; the emergence of punk, the birth of hiphop and street culture's influence in fashion and film.
The exhibition, supported by adidas Originals, features new works, large-scale installations, original collectables and exceptional fashion from the likes of Conor Harrington, FUTURA2000, Guerrilla Girls and KAWS, among many more.
Curator Roger Gastman says that "with every exhibition we've put together I always learn something new and London is no exception. The amount of stories and historical moments--some of which may have been forgotten and arguably unknown until now--are what will make our Saatchi Gallery show such a spectacle. We really hope to educate and inspire through a curious lens that digs into the nooks and crannies of all these subcultures and the massive role London played in bringing them to light on a world stage".
From the exploration of the socio-political turmoil of the late 70s and 80s, to the contextualisation of the cross-pollination of influences across fashion, film and music, no area of the Saatchi Gallery remains untouched.
“A collection of pioneers like these in one place is rare. Being able to exhibit with such respected artists is something I don’t take for granted! I hope London is ready for a real glimpse into L.A. street art culture,” says featured artist Mister CARTOON.
BEYOND THE STREETS LONDON is open to the public until 9th May.
