Jane Dickson: Fist of Fury

Flashy ads, gloomy streets and naked skin – Alison Jacques presents Fist of Fury, Jane Dickson's first solo exhibition in London in over 20 years. Following the artist's critically acclaimed involvement in the 2022 Whitney Biennial, this exhibition includes both historial and recent paintings, such as her praised 'Times Square' series.

Dickson's shift from photography to painting allows her to not only describe what she saw, but reflect upon her own psychology. 'Paintings are a distillation of my experience.'

Time Square used to come alive at night – cinames, adult entertainment, hotels, liquor stores were all lit by gigantic neon sings. When Dickson moved from Chicago to New York, in 1977, she took countless photos from her window that overlooked the tourist destination.

During the pandemic, she discovered a bag of negatives from the mid-80's, After printing, she found a pre-gentrified New York, aiding as inspiration for her latest paintings. As Jane says: 'a previous idea can have a second coming.'

Fist of Fury is open at Alison Jacques until the 1st July.
