ALICE SPRINGS. RETROSPECTIVE

In celebration of June Newton's, aka Alice Springs' 100th birthday, over 200 photographs are displayed in ALICE SPRINGS. RETROSPECTIVE at the Helmut Hewton Foundation in Berlin. Many of the photographs on display have never been seen by the public.

June started working as a professional photographer under her alias Alice Springs in 1970, focusing on portraiture. As a former Australian stage actor, June helped Helmut Newton when he fell ill, taking his place shooting the advertising image for French cigarette brand Gitanes in Paris. In her portraits over the years she captures not only the appearance of the subject, but also their aura.

Her subjects look curious and open – directly into June's 33mm camera. Most of the work has been shot in public spaces or in the comfort of her models' homes.

A curated selection from the couple's work together are also displayed in the exhibition, making it come full circle – the life and work of Helmut and June Newton connected in various ways, and now make their way to Berlin.

ALICE SPRINGS. RETROSPECTIVE is open at the Helmut Newton Foundation, Berlin until the 19th November.
