Moki Cherry: Here and Now

ICA London is home to the first solo exhibition in an UK instutition of artist, designer and educator Moki Cherry. Displaying over 30 artworks and archival pieces, Here and Now celebrates the artists exploration of the intersection of life and art, her collaborative and interdisciplinary practice and resourceful solution to facing gendered challenges, working as an artist and mother.

Including textile, sculpture, painting, drawing, writing, collage, Here and Now also features a 16mm film shot by Moki of her first solo exhibition at Galleri 1, Stockholm in 1973. The film gives an intimate insight into the details of her work which she wanted to capture for the future, as she evaluated this significant moment in her career.

Artist, musician and archivist for the Estate of Moki Cherry, Naima Karlsson, says: ‘Moki Cherry’s work engages with a history of making and functionality, where her art was a tool for expression, survival, playfulness and learning. At the forefront of Moki’s activity was the philosophy of living in the “now”, expressed in her bold colours and use of language, humour and improvisation.'

Throughout her life, Moki Cherry used her creativity to communicate with and inspire others. The event program created for this exhibition invites contemporary artists to respond to the themes mentioned in the Swedish artist's work.

Moki Cherry: Here and Now at the Institute of Contemporary Arts is on view until the 3rd of September.
